Somsubhra Chattopadhyay

Principal investigator, Assistant Professor of Biology (Ecohydrology)

Dr. Somsubhra Chattopadhyay is the lead PI and an Assistant Professor of Biology (Ecohydrology) in the Department of Biology, College of Science and Engineering, at Texas State University. He completed his PhD at the University of Kentucky (KY, USA) with Dr. Dwayne Edwards (now at Virginia Tech) and his MS at North Carolina A&T State University (NC, USA) with Dr. Manoj Jha. He was a postdoctoral researcher with Dr. MikoĊ‚aj Piniewski at Warsaw University of Life Sciences (Warsaw, Poland) and at the Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (Bangalore, India).

His research links watershed hydrology with freshwater ecology, asking how flow regimes, and their alteration by climate change and human water use, shape biodiversity and ecosystem function in rivers.

Bassam Abubaker

Postdoctoral Research Associate

Dr. Bassam Abubaker is a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of Biology at Texas State University. He completed his PhD in Environmental Sciences at the University of Pannonia (Hungary), where his research focused on freshwater diatom ecology, biodiversity assessment and DNA metabarcoding.

In the lab, he studies aquatic biodiversity, particularly diatoms and macroinvertebrates, using molecular and traditional methods to investigate ecological responses to hydrological variability in perennial and intermittent streams.
